Peace in Schools

Peace in Schools

Our middle and high schools today are fraught with unconscious eating, obesity, eating disorders, peer pressure, bullying, substance abuse, self-mutilating, depression and teenage suicide. There has never been a better time to address the root of these problems, rather than the symptoms. ‘Peace in Schools’ is pleased to offer such curriculum to staff and students alike.

‘Peace in Schools’ teaches students how to achieve their full potential through mindful practice. Students learn to pay attention to their internal daily-life experience and cultivate understanding and compassion for themselves and others.

Awareness Practice provides students with the skills to focus better in the classroom, understand how to successfully deal with stress, learn to communicate consciously and cultivate healthy relationships with themselves and others. Through Awareness Practice exercises students learn to focus their attention on the present moment. This allows them to see what motivates their actions and creates new possibilities rather than enslavement to habitual reactions. Students also learn how to become aware of the internal negative dialogue that reinforces destructive behavior and are given practical methods to transform this internal landscape. Through these teachings, students can develop ways to make different choices – choices that lead to wholesome, healthy, fulfilled lives.

‘Peace in Schools’ conforms its curriculum to the specific needs of the individual schools. No two programs are exactly alike, just as no two schools are exactly alike. Each curriculum is crafted to meet the needs of students, teachers, and the staff at large. Seminars and workshops are offered to students within their classroom, with separate trainings for staff and teachers.

Currently, ‘Peace in Schools’ is in collaboration with MoveYoga to bring Awareness Practice and yoga into Portland, Oregon-area schools and programs including high schools, middle schools, and most recently, a residential program for undocumented youth. Please contact us if you are interested in having ‘Peace in Schools’ visit your school or organization.

It has been an eye opening experience to have One House of Peace at our school. For many students and staff, breathing, setting intentions, focusing the mind, and simply relaxing is a new concept — or one that is not thought of often in our fast paced society. I have seen the benefits for the students, and many teachers have been open to trying something new.

Caverly set up a booth for HealthCorps’ in-school health fair. It was a huge success and packed with students every hour. She has also led Benson staff and students in simple meditation and relaxation techniques. The concepts Caverly teaches are so simple, yet so powerful. Teachers have learned how to set goals from a deeper place within and students have been learning that they have the power to focus on anything they put their mind to. It’s been amazing to watch students settle down, refocus, and listen to their minds and bodies. What a great tool to learn at such a young age!
